The text opens by stating that the talks were held 'in the light of the C. R. Formula.' This formula, proposed by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, provided the framework for the dialogue. It was an attempt to bridge the gap between Congress and the Muslim League.

Gandhi's core argument was that since most Indian Muslims were converts from Hinduism, their change of religion did not change their fundamental nationality. He viewed them as part of one Indian nation.

Quaid-e-Azam argued that a settlement between Hindus and Muslims must come before independence. He believed this would make it easier to jointly push the British out of India.

Due to the irreconcilable differences in their ideologies, particularly on the Two-Nation Theory, the talks ended without any agreement. The text clearly states they were 'unsuccessful' (nakam ho gaye).

Gandhi insisted he was not participating as an official representative of Congress but in his personal capacity. This stance was a point of contention for Quaid-e-Azam as it lacked official binding authority.
